Doomsday Clock Advances by 1 Second: How Serious Is the Threat to Humanity?

Washington, D.C., LOGIC.co.id – The Doomsday Clock has once again moved forward, signaling an increasing threat to human civilization. On Tuesday (January 28, 2025), the clock’s hands advanced by one second, leaving only 89 seconds until potential global destruction.

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, the organization responsible for maintaining the Doomsday Clock since the Cold War, announced this shift as a warning sign of worsening global crises.

The World on the Brink of Global Crisis

According to scientists from the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, the decision to move the Doomsday Clock forward is driven by escalating geopolitical tensions, worsening climate change, and the spread of misleading information.

This adjustment comes just days after Donald Trump’s inauguration for his second term as President of the United States. Some of his initial policies have raised concerns in the international community, including a more aggressive foreign policy stance and reduced global cooperation on critical issues.

Additionally, data shows that 2024 recorded the highest global temperatures in history, further reinforcing the growing impact of climate change.

“With the clock now set at 89 seconds to midnight, the world is in the most perilous situation ever recorded in the history of the Doomsday Clock,” said former Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos, who currently serves as Chair of The Elders, a group of former world leaders.

Santos emphasized that this movement should serve as a serious warning for all nations to take immediate action to prevent even worse consequences.

Disinformation: A New Threat Worsening the Crisis

Beyond nuclear threats and climate change, experts also highlight the increasing spread of disinformation, which has further eroded public trust in global policies.

Santos pointed out that the rise of fake news and conspiracy theories in the digital era has significantly hindered global efforts to address pressing issues.

“Rapidly advancing technology has been misused to spread misinformation recklessly and without accountability, exacerbating the crisis of trust in science and public policy,” he said, as quoted by AFP.

Scientists and world leaders are calling for stronger international cooperation to collectively address these threats. They stress that without real action, the world may move even closer to the catastrophic scenarios long feared.
